Masking and Burnout Counselling in Essex

Hiding who you are to fit in can take a huge toll. Counselling can help you understand it and find more freedom.

Understanding

What is masking?

Masking is hiding or suppressing parts of yourself, such as natural reactions, interests or needs, to fit in or stay safe. It is common among autistic and ADHD people and others who learned they needed to hide.

Over time masking can lead to exhaustion, anxiety and loss of identity.

You may recognise

  • Exhaustion after being around people
  • Rehearsing conversations
  • Not knowing who you are underneath
  • Hiding stims, interests or needs
  • Burnout or shutdown
  • Fear of being found out
