Parentification Counselling in Essex

If you had to be the adult as a child, the effects can last a lifetime. Counselling can help you finally put yourself down for a rest.

Understanding

What is parentification?

Parentification is when a child takes on adult responsibilities, such as caring for a parent or siblings, managing emotions or keeping the family together. It often happens in homes with addiction, illness, conflict or neglect.

As adults, people may struggle to rest, ask for help or feel they matter beyond what they do for others.

You may recognise

  • Always taking care of everyone
  • Difficulty asking for help
  • Feeling guilty when you rest
  • Perfectionism or over-responsibility
  • Choosing relationships where you caretake
  • Not knowing what you need
