Complex Trauma and PTSD Counselling in Essex

When trauma has been prolonged or repeated, or has left you on constant alert, it can affect almost every part of life. Support is possible.

Understanding

What is complex trauma?

Complex trauma usually develops after repeated or long-lasting experiences, often in childhood or in relationships where escape was difficult. Post-traumatic stress can follow a single overwhelming event or ongoing exposure.

Counselling focuses first on safety and stability, then on understanding your reactions and gently working through what has happened.

You may recognise

  • Flashbacks, nightmares or intrusive memories
  • Always feeling on guard
  • Emotional numbness or sudden emotional storms
  • Avoiding reminders
  • Difficulty with trust and closeness
  • Shame and a damaged sense of self

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is PTSD different from complex trauma?

They overlap. PTSD often follows a specific event, while complex trauma follows repeated experiences. Counselling can help with both.

Do I need a diagnosis to come?

No. You do not need a diagnosis to get support.
